K-12 Education


My professional and spiritual lives have been intimately involved with teaching.


During my 9 years with the Republic of Singapore Navy, I studied for 3 of these years and was an instructor for another 5 of these years. I became Chief Instructor of the electronic system my branch was in charge of, during my final 3 years.


All these while I was also teaching in the Sunday School, eventually taking over as Chief Teacher first of the Pre-Teens (Grades 6 to 7), and then of the Juniors section (Grades 1 to 5).


I left the Navy to become…a schoolteacher. Again, I stayed for 5 years with the MOE, moving on to take over as Head Pastoral Care & Pupil Welfare, before leaving to found Ten Talents Media Pte Ltd. And I’ve turned a full circle, now teaching at the Shanghai Singapore International School. My heart is still for education after all.

Office Titles in China

The Oriental people (by Oriental I refer to the narrower definition – people of Chinese, Korean, Japanese and Vietnamese ethnicity) tend to be more “title-conscious” than westerners. We live in highly regulated and patriachal societies, and respect is something very important to us. This “respect” also tends to be reflected in the “titles” and positions occupied in society. When my Chinese acquaintances (those I do not know well) speak to me, for example, they always refer to me as 曾老师 (“Chan-Teacher”) or 曾总 ("Chan-General Manager"). What is Christianity?

I have people, both those who seek God and those who are just curious, ask me this. What I want to say, first and foremost, is that Christianity is not a set of rituals you perform to get you to heaven. Neither is it a set of rules you follow that teach you ‘How to be good’. No, Christianity is our relationship with God our creator, who loves us. It can be traced to an event occurring nearly 2000 years ago, at the birth of Jesus Christ. Freelance Chinese-English Translation Work

If there is something that characterises me, it is that I am always willing to try out new things, even as there are many new things that I do not want to try. I have gotten and completed my first freelancer project, a translation project. It is not the first time I get paid for my translation services (most of the time I do not get paid). The first was when I did the book Flowing Desires for Vivian (a China-born Singaporean), who has since become a family friend. Kitten and I put in long hours to translate the novel - it was harder than we thought. This time, I translated an 8-page brochure from English to simplified Chinese. It was a brochure on yacht ownership, and it makes me really want to own one of those yacht memberships one of these days. If the Lord be willing, one day I shall. Perhaps when the children are all flown the coop, Kitten and I can live onboard a yacht!
